Rutherford Nets Career-High 30 Points as Men's Basketball Cruises Past Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba shots a sizzling 62.5% and got a career-high 30 points from senior Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) in posting an 85-75 win over host Carson-Newman in  South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Holt Fieldhouse.  The Catawba Indians improve to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in the SAC, while the Eagles fall to 8-10 and 3-5.

Rutherford scored 20 of his 30 points in the opening half as Catawba opened up a 48-37 advantage.  The Indians hit on 18-of-27 (66.7%) in the opening period with Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) added 15 of 20 points in the first 20 minutes.  Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) also reached double figures for the Indians with 15 points and pulled down six boards.

A 15-2 run in the final five minutes of the first half was key in the Tribe’s win.  Rutherford’s layup snapped a 30-all tie at the 4:54 mark with Fields hitting a pair of three-pointers in the run as the Indians went up 45-32.  Rutherford added a three-point play with 1:08 before the break for the 48-37 lead.

Carson-Newman trimmed a 17-point deficit to nine at 56-47 on a three-pointer by Quinche Dowdell at the 16:06 mark, but Catawba answered on a three-pointer by Houston and two jumpers by Rutherford to lead 63-48.  The Indians pushed the lead to 22 with just over six minutes to play.

Dowdell and Tray Okoth each scored 15 points for the Eagles.  Darrion Maxtion added a dozen points and Jordan Dixon 10 in the loss.  Carson-Newman hit on just under 50% for the game and committed four less turnovers than Catawba, but could not overcome the Indians’ hot hand.

Rutherford hit on 14-of-17 shots on the night.  Fields canned 7-of-11 and was 4-of-5 behind the arc.  The Indians battled even on the boards with C-N.  Starting point guard Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) missed the game with a leg injury.
