Baseball fails to get regional bid

The Catawba College baseball team was denied a bid to the NCAA II South Regional as the Tribe finished as the fifth team in the final regional poll with the top four teams advancing. Tampa, Carson-Newman, Florida Southern and Rollins will compete at the regional. The Indians end the year with a 30-21 record, marking the third straight year Catawba has reached 30 wins. During the season, Catawba broke or tied 28 school records and returns all but four players, including its entire pitching staff. The four seniors were all starters, second baseman Josh Jordan, outfielders Israel Morrow and Curt Motsinger and catcher Mike Robbins. Morrow led the record breakers, becoming the all-time leader in hits (253), runs scored (175), runs batted in (147) and games played (195). Junior Blair Reynolds put his name on five records, including doubles in a season (26) and a career (51). He also tied one of Catawba’s oldest records by scoring a run in 16 straight games, which was first set in 1943 by Vern Benson. Sophomore Spence Southard set a new mark with 30 stolen bases in a season and tied the mark of five steals in one game, first set in 1959 by Bobby Rusher. Southard also set a career mark with three grand slams. He hit two last season, including one on the first pitch he saw as a collegiate player. #####
