Women's Basketball Sees Five-Game Winning Streak Snapped at Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba shot just 30% and was beaten badly on the boards (55-33) in a 75-59 loss at Wingate in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. A10-0 run late in the first half provided the Bulldogs with a comfortable lead it never gave up. Wingate improves to 12-9 overall and 5-5 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 13-7 and 6-3.
Catawba held brief leads early, the last at 17-16 following a pair of free throws by Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day). The sophomore was held to only eight points, but did grab a game-high 15 rebounds. Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) led the Lady Indians with 15 points, while Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) added a dozen on four three-pointers.
Wingate got a three-pointer from Kurie Washington to regain the lead and another three by Washington put the Bulldogs out front for good at 22-19 with 8:59 left in the first half. The Lady Indians scored two points over a four-minute stretch as Wingate jumped to a 36-23 advantage.
The Lady Indians, down 44-32 at the break, scored just three points over the first five minutes of the second half and Wingate pulled out to a 55-35 edge. The Bulldogs went on to build a 27-point lead with 12 minutes to go. Catawba got within 15 points with five minutes left, but the deficit was too big to overcome.
Washington tallied a game-high 20 points to pace Wingate and also had seven rebounds. Stacie Rhodes had 14 points and eight boards, while Sarah Rosser added 11 points. Sarrah Wollett had eight points, eight rebounds and six assists. Catawba also shot just 30% in the first meeting with Wingate, but pulled out the win at home. The loss snapped a season-long five-game winning streak for the Lady Indians.
