Baseball Grabs Season-Opening Win Over Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba opened its 2010 baseball season with a 10-6 win over visiting Pfeiffer on Thursday afternoon at Newman Park. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) hit a three-run homer, while Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) and Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View HS) had clutch two-run doubles in the eighth to lift the Catawba Indians to the win.
Catawba scored four times in the first to take the lead. John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) singled home the first run and Hohn followed with a three-run homer. That would by the lone damage off Pfeiffer starter John McDaniel (Mocksville, NC), who tossed three innings. The Falcons closed the gap with single runs on a JT Pope (Mebane, NC) double in the second and a solo home run from Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) in the fourth.
Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) put the Indians up 5-2 with a single in the fourth before Pfeiffer got two in the fifth to pull within a run. Carlos Badillo (Gurabo, PUERTO RICO) and Zach Pou (Winston-Salem, NC) led off with doubles, but Tribe starter Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) got out of the frame with the lead.
Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) singled home a run for Catawba in the sixth and freshman Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) held Pfeiffer scoreless for three frames on just one hit. Catawba got four big insurance runs in the eighth. Moore and White each doubled with two outs, plating a pair of runs each, for a 10-4 lead. The Falcons got two in the ninth, but the Indians held on for the victory.
Furr notched the win, allowing six hits and four runs over five innings. He walked one and struck out four. Lomascolo posted three strikeouts. Freshman Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) collected three hits (two doubles) and scored three times. Parker and Moore each had two hits. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) was limited to a flare single to right in the third inning, but it was enough to extend his record hitting streak to 36 games.
Pou and Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) each had two hits for the Falcons. Pou and Badillo scored twice. Luke Wilhelm (High Point, NC) struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief.
