Women's Basketball Stumbles Against Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Tusculum’s Jasmine Gunn (Nashville, TN) posted a double-double with 24 points and 11 assists as the Pioneers downed host Catawba 80-56 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Tusculum wins for the fifth straight time and improves to 14-7 overall and 7-4 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 13-8 and 6-4.
The Pioneers surged ahead over the second part of the first half, building a 16-14 lead over the final 12 minutes to a 41-23 bulge at the break. Catawba hit just 8-of-28 (28.6%) in the opening half to Tusculum’s 16-of-32 (50%). Catawba was never able to get back into the game. Tusculum moved out by 20 early in the second half and led by as many as 31 points.
Catherine Hintz (Hastings, MN) also had a double-double for Tusculum with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kendal Baxter (Sevierville, TN) came off the bench to add 15 points on five three-pointers. Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) had a double-double for Catawba with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Brooke Whitley (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) added 11 points.
Catawba shot just 30.3% (20-of-66) for the game and was 11-of-23 (48%) at the line. Tusculum finished at 30-of-63 (47.6%) from the floor and was 14-of-16 (82%) at the line. Catawba held a slight 44-41 edge on the boards, but committed five more turnovers.
