Graham names Swimming award winners

Catawba College swim coach Betsy Graham announced her team award winners for the 2001-02 season. During the year the squad set four school records as Melissa Schiffel broke her own marks in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyles, while Kim Elisee set a new mark in the 50 back stroke. Sophomore Beth Gill received the academic award as she has earned a 3.79 GPA, while majoring in athletic training. The most improved swimmer award went to sophomore Caitlin Koukal, who ended the year with seven personal best times. She lowered her previous marks in five freestyle events as well as the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Rookie of the Year honors was awarded to Christin Bolte. The freshman was one of the team’s most versatile swimmers, competing in three distance freestyle events, along with backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley events. Melissa Schiffel was named the Most Valuable Swimmer after earning All-America honors for the second year. The senior holds eight individual school records. #####
