Baseball Takes Two From California,PA; Moore Reaches Base In 11 Of 12 At Bats

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting California, PA, on Monday at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians took the opener 6-5 and claimed an 11-4 victory in the nightcap.  Catawba, ranked 17th in NCAA II, improves to 3-0, while the Vulcans fall to 0-2.

The Indians led 4-0 in the opener, but needed a two-out, walk-off single by Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) to grab the win.  Moore was on base six times for Catawba in game one, with two hits and four walks.  Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) joined Moore with a pair of RBI.

Moore put the Indians on top, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the second.  Hohn added a RBI single in the third and Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) plated a run on a fielder’s choice for a 3-0 lead.  Moore scored on a wild pitch in the fourth for the 4-0 edge.

The Vulcans did not get a hit off Catawba starter Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS/Appalachian St.) until the sixth when Casey Teagarden (Greensburg, PA) singled with one out.  Sam DiMatteo (Center, PA) added a two-out double, but Cal failed to score.

California began to rally in the eight as DiMatteo and Aaron Ordy (Butler, PA) delivered RBI singles.  Hohn walked to force in a run for Catawba in the eight then the Vulcans struck for three to tie it.  Troy Handza (Glenshaw, PA) singled home a pair of runs and later scored on a throwing error to tie the game.  In the Catawba ninth, Michael Tancini (Concord, NC/Robinson HS/UNC Pembroke) hit into a fielder’s choice after a single by Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Moore followed with a single off the wall in center for the game-winner.

Mullins did not get a decision for Catawba.  He allowed three hits with six strikeouts over six innings.  Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) got the win as he worked out of the ninth.  He allowed two hits and an unearned run in an inning.  Moore and Parker had two hits for the Tribe.  DiMatteo led the Vulcans with three hits, while Handza collected two.

The Indians blew open a close game in the nightcap with a five-run sixth.  Cal had taken the lead in the third on a RBI-double by Chuck Faust (Hershey, PA), but Catawba answered in its third.  Moore led off with a double and scored on a triple by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS).  Hohn doubled home Lyerly.  Kyle Misch (Westerville, OH) tied things up in the fourth with a two-out single.

Catawba took the lead back in the fifth as Lyerly led off with a bunt single, stole second and scored on a double by Hohn.  Two errors aided the big inning by Catawba in the sixth.  Moore walked, stole second and then scored on a bad throw as he stole third.  After an error would have ended the frame, Cameron White (Columbia, NC/Ridge View HS) singled home a run and Furr doubled home two more.

Freshman Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) earned the win for the Indians.  He allowed two runs off six hits over five innings.  He walked four and struck out seven.  Moore reached base five of six times in the second game and walked seven times in the doubleheader.  He has reached base in 15 of 17 plate appearances.  Lyerly had one hit in the opener, a bouncing single up the middle in the sixth, then went 4-for-5 in the nightcap.

Faust had four hits and three RBI to lead the Vulcans.  He had a solo home run in the seventh.  Ordy followed with two hits.  Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, PA) got the start for California and struck out 10 in four innings with no decision.
