Softball Finally Takes Field; Sweeps Opening Doubleheader From Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba pounded out 26 hits in sweeping a softball doubleheader from host Pfeiffer on Wednesday afternoon at Ingram Field. The Catawba Indians took the opener 6-2 then ran away with a 14-1 victory in game two. The Lady Indians stand at 2-0 on the year, while the Falcons fall to 1-3.
In the opener, Catawba broke a 1-1 tie with a four spot in the third inning after two were out. Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS). Brittney Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS), Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough HS) and Carly Sabat (Warren, HO/Howland HS) followed with RBI singles to push Catawba out front 5-1.
That was enough for sophomore Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS), who allowed just two runs off five hits over six innings. She posted seven strikeouts. The Lady Indians rapped out 14 hits with Sabat collecting three. Marshall, Thornburg, Hester and Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) each had two hits. Marshall had two RBI in the opener and became the school's all-time leader in that category.
The Lady Indians jumped out quickly in game two with 10 runs in the first inning. Casey Baucom’s (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS) three-run double was the big blow after an error prolonged the inning. Marshall added a two-run home run in the third and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) hit a solo shot in the fifth.
Freshman Kelsie Hudson (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis HS) tossed a complete game for Catawba. She allowed a run on five hits with a strikeout. Geouge had three hits for the Lady Indians, while Gibbs had two hits and three RBI. Marshall and Sabat added two more hits each.
Melanie Conklin had two hits for the Falcons in the nightcap. Bryttny Keshka had a RBI triple in the fifth to avoid the shutout.
