Houston Reaches 2,000-Point Milestone as Men's Basketball Grabs Share of SAC Lead
NEWBERRY, SC -- Senior Antonio Houston (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) became the third member of Catawba’s 2,000-point club as he scored 18 points in a 78-68 win over host Newberry in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena. The win moves the Catawba Indians into a share of the league lead as they improve to 15-7 overall and 8-3 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 8-15 and 3-9.
Houston notched the history points on a three-pointer with 12:26 to go in the first half, tying the contest at 9-9. Another three-pointer gave the Indians their first lead at 19-16 with 8:54 left. Catawba took control with a 13-4 run over the final five minutes of the opening half to lead 39-27 at the break. The Indians shot 55% in the first half.
Newberry never closed within double digits in the final half. Stuart Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND/Poynton) drilled a three-pointer to open the half and a three-pointer by Justin Huntley (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) at the midpoint of the period gave Catawba a 60-42 lead. Newberry scored the final seven points to get within 10.
Houston also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists for Catawba. Donald Rutherford (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) followed with 15 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Stephen Coles (Danville, VA/Washington HS) hit on 6-of-8 shots to score 14 points with seven rebounds and Rob Fields (Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkerson HS) added 11.
Stephane Bakinde led Newberry as the senior posted a double-double with a season-high 17 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. Ryan Barnes scored 11 points, while Jawuan Lockhart scored 10 points off of the bench. Perry Nelson dished out six assists in his first career start.
