Link and Lyerly Help Lift Baseball to 11-10 Win at the Abbey
BELMONT, NC -- Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) each knocked in four runs and Catawba held on for an 11-10 win over host Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The 17th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 4-0, while the Crusaders fall to 1-4.
The Indians entered the ninth with a 10-5 lead and a two-out solo home run by Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) proved to be important at the end. The Crusaders rallied and cut the margin to 11-10 on a three-run homer by Chris Vasquez, but Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) was able to get the final out to preserve the win.
Catawba stranded five runners in the first three innings as the Crusaders worked out of bases loaded jams in the first and third innings. The Indians finally broke through in the fourth on a two-out, two-run single by Link. Lyerly followed with a three-run homer for a 5-0 edge.
Belmont Abbey tied the game in the fifth on a three-run shot by Danny Brion. Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS) worked out of further damage and would get the win as Catawba answered back with two runs in its sixth. Link broke the tie on a single.
Lyerly went 5-for-5 at the plate, including a triple and the home run. He extended his hitting streak to 39 games and has nine hits over the last two games. Link added three hits, while Moore picked up two RBI.
Brion added a second home run in the big ninth inning for Belmont Abbey, totaling four RBI on the day. Chris and Justin Vazquez each collected three hits. Both teams pounded out 16 hits.
