#17 Baseball Grabs Win; Lyerly's Hit Streak Ends at 39
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba pulled out a 2-1 win over visiting Shippensburg in baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park. The game was called after seven due to snow. The 17th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 5-0, while the Red Raiders fall to 0-1. Catawba senior Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) had a 39-game hitting streak as he went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.
Catawba starter Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) tossed six innings, allowing just a single run off five hits and struck out a career-high nine batters. Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) pitched a perfect seventh to earn his first save.
Shippensburg went on top in the first inning on a solo home run by A.J. Czap (Philipsburg, PA). Catawba answered on a two-out double by Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville). The Indians left the bases loaded in the fifth and Shippensburg wasted a leadoff double by Ben Miller (New Providence, PA) in the sixth.
The Indians took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) raced home on a wild pitch as Griffin Wise (Gastonia, NC/Forestview HS). Furr reached on a two-base error to open the inning and Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) beat out a bunt to put runners on the corners. Bostian stole second as Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS).
Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) collected three of Catawba’s six hits. Lyerly and Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) each stole a pair of bases.
Nick Umberger (Downingtown, PA) allowed one run on five hits over five innings and posted nine strikeouts. Ted Williams (Vienna, VA) took the loss in relief.
Lyerly, who had nine hits in his last 10 at bats enter the game, failed to extend his school record streak. He hit into a fielder’s choice in the first, walked in the third and was intentionally walked in the fifth after Moore and Link moved up on stolen bases with one out. In his final at bat with the bases loaded, Lyerly hit a ball up the middle that was turned into a force out at second on the only play that could have been made.
