Baseball Stays Unbeaten With Sweep of Shippensburg
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba, ranked 17th in NCAA II, swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting Shippensburg on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park, winning 9-5 and 7-1. The Catawba Indians remain undefeated, improving to 8-0, while the Red Raiders fall to 0-4.
A pair of freshmen pitchers, Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) and Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS), earned wins on the mound with strong starts. Lomascolo improved to 2-0 as he allowed just a run off four hits over six innings. Whitley, making his first start, surrendered a run off just two hits as he worked into the sixth.
John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) put the Indians on top in the opener, connecting on the first pitch of the second inning for a home run. Brett Huffman (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) led off the fourth with a first-pitch home run which started a five-run frame as the Indians took control by a 7-0 count. Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) doubled home two runs and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) connected on a two-run homer.
The Indians led 9-1 entering the seventh then held on as Shippensburg scored four times and got the tying run to the on deck circle. Zack Piper (Shippensburg, PA) and Cody Kulp (Boyertown, PA) each doubled home a pair of runs. Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS) recorded a pair of outs after surrendering the double to Kulp to end the game.
Whitley allowed just one hit over five innings of the nightcap, before he was chased in the sixth after a one-out single and two walks. Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) walked the first batter he faced to force home a run, but recorded the next five batters to close out the game.
Catawba scored three times in the first to grab the lead. Lyerly singled home a run, while Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) doubled home a run with two outs and Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) followed with a RBI single. Lyerly drove home another run in the second with Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) doubling home two in the third. Furr capped a 3-for-3 night with a solo homer in the fourth.
Bostian also collected three hits in the nightcap for Catawba. Parker had two hits in each game. Eric Herman (Grantville, PA) had three hits for the Red Raiders in the two games. Kulp had a hit in both games and drove in three runs.
