Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to #1 C.W. Post 9-5
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Top-ranked C.W. Post pulled away from Catawba to take a 9-5 win in lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex. The Patriots, defending NCAA II Champions, improve to 2-0, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-1. C.W. Post had defeated the Indians in the 2008 and 2009 season openers by a combined 35-7 margin.
Freshman Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll HS) put the Indians on top just over a minute and half into the contest and Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) gave Catawba a 2-0 lead at the 9:12 mark of the opening quarter. John Wood (Marblehead, MA) pulled the Patriots within a goal just seven seconds before the end of the quarter, but Catawba went back up by two goals with 9:37 left before the break on a tally by Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King).
Post battled back to tie the score by the half, getting goals from Joe Meo (West Sayville, NY) and Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, NY). It was all Patriots in the third quarter, outscoring Catawba 4-0. Doug Hoch (Cortlandt Manor, NY) upped the lead to 8-3 with a tally early in the fourth before Catawba freshman Dave Banik (Marietta, GA/Lassiter HS) ended the stretch of seven straight Post goals with 8:26 left.
Meo and Rodriguez each had two goals and an assist for the Patriots. Artem had two goals for Catawba, while Tuohy posted a goal and two helpers. Catawba goalie Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods) stopped 18 shots, while his counterpart, Post’s Dan Orlando (South Hempstead, MY), made 13 saves.
The Patriots held a 40-25 edge in shots and picked up 53 ground balls to 19 for Catawba. Mike Cama (Levittown, NY) had a dozen ground balls and won 14-of-18 face-offs for C.W. Post.
