Swimming Opens BGMC Championships With Record Swim in Men's 800 Free Relay
CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Catawba women stand fifth and the men eighth after the first night of competition at the 2010 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships being held through Saturday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Teams swam events in the 1000 free and the 800 free relay.
Freshman Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, GA/Stockbridge HS) had the top individual finish as she was eighth in the 1000 free. Her time of 10:46.96 set a freshman record and was a lifetime best. It was the second fastest time in school history. Kara Morrill (Rockville, MD/Rockville HS) was 14th with a lifetime best time of 11:15.40.
The women’s 800 free relay team of Owens, Tory Kiefner (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS), Meredith Shultz (Richmond, VA/James River HS) and Laurenn Singleton (Elkin, NC/Elkin HS) placed fifth with a time of 7:59.11. The time was less than a half second off the school record time.
The men’s 800 free relay team of Mikael Karlsson (Norsborg, SWEDEN/Tullinge), Alex Higginbotham (Gilroy, CA/Valley Christian), Grant Gibson (Owen Sound, Ontario, CANADA/West Hill) and Alex Walpole (Pembroke Pines, FL/Cheyenne Mountain(CO) HS) swam to an eighth place finish. The group posted a new school record time of 7:01.53.
Gibson swam the third fastest time in school history in the 1000 free and was 12th in a time of 9:59.42. Zach Owen (Charlotte, NC/E. Mecklenburg HS) had a lifetime best swim of 10:32.69 and finished 17th. Craige Hoffman (Weddington, NC/Weddington HS) was 21st in a time of 10:49.00.
