Late First Quarter Flurry Sends Lacrosse Past Pfeiffer
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba doubled up Pfeiffer and claimed a 16-8 win in lacrosse action on Friday night at Mallard Creek High School. The Catawba Indians got four goals each from Walter McDonough (Wilmington, NC/Laney HS) and Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King HS) in improving to 1-1 on the season. The Falcons fall to 0-1.
Catawba turned the game around late in the first quarter. The Indians trailed 3-0, but scored six goals in the final 4:30 of the period and never trailed again. Artem had a man-up goal to get things started with McDonough scoring three times in the flurry. Catawba had two goals in the final 10 seconds.
The Indians led 9-5 at the half then blew things opening in the final quarter, outscoring Pfeiffer 5-1. McDonough added two assists for six points on the night. Artem, who added one assist, and Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) each had five points. Tuohy had three goals and two assists.
Dan Mesler had a pair of goals for Pfeiffer. Jimmy Dyches and Matt McShea shared time in goal. Dyches had six saves in the first half with McShea stopping three shots in the final 30 minutes. Michael Pecchia (Colquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods HS) had 11 saves for the Indians.
Catawba held a 41-27 edge in shots and collected 24 ground balls to 20 for the Falcons. McDonough had a game-high five ground balls.
