Baseball Picks Up Split at Tusculum in Saturday's Doubleheader
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Senior Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) hit a go-ahead sixth-inning homer and Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) shutout host Tusculum over three and two-thirds innings of relief as Catawba rebounded from its first loss of the season to split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers took the opener 7-4, but the 11th-ranked Catawba Indians grabbed a 6-5 win in the nightcap. Catawba stands at 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Pioneers are 5-5 and 1-2.
Catawba jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap as John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) hit a three-run homer in the third after he had scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Bostian (Kannapollis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) in the second. Tusculum rallied off Tribe freshman starter Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) with five runs in the fourth.
A walk and three singles with one out in the fifth chased Lomascolo and Rolondo Bonner greeted Huneycutt with a two-run single. Huneycutt got out of the inning without further damage then limited the Pioneers to just one hit over the final three innings. He struck out six.
Down 5-4 in the sixth, Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) drew a leadoff walk. Tusculum reliever Kyle Smith struck out the next two batters before Link sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to provide the winning runs. Link, Neese and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) had two hits for Catawba in the nightcap. Sean Finucane had three hits for Tusculum.
A four-run first lifted Tusculum in the opener. The Pioneers strung together four one-out singles, capped by a two-run single from Payden Houser to go up 4-1. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) singled home a run for Catawba in the fifth, but Tusculum answered that run then added two in the sixth on a single by Bonner to stretch the lead to 7-2. Catawba got the tying run to the plate in the ninth with two outs, but Smith got Hohn to foul out to the catcher to end it.
Lyerly and Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) each had three hits for Catawba in the opener. Lyerly drove in three runs. Link had the other hit for Catawba. Lyerly did not get a hit in the nightcap, but did walk twice to extend his consecutive streak of reaching base safely to 47 games.
Bonner collected two hits and had two RBI in each game for Tusculum. Taylor Rakes picked up the win in the opener. He allowed just three this over six innings and had seven strikeouts. Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS) tossed two perfect innings of relief for the Indians.
