Softball Comes Up Short In Opening Two Games at Catawba Invitational
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba dropped both of its opening games at the 2010 Catawba Invitational softball tournament on Friday afternoon at Salisbury Community Park. The Catawba Indians fell 10-9 to West Chester in eight innings then lost 6-3 to 14th-ranked Kutztown. The Lady Indians now stand at 5-5 on the year.
Catawba suffered a tough loss in the opener after rallying back from a 7-0 deficit. The Lady Indians tied the game with two outs in the seventh on a three-run homer by Katie Huggins (Oviedo, FL/Lake Howell HS/Lake Sumter CC) and took the lead in the eighth on a two-out, two-run homer by freshman Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS). The two-out magic would not stop unfortunately for Catawba as Kate Kmiecinski delivered the final blow with her own two-out, two-run homer to give West Chester the win.
West Chester grabbed control of the game in the second as the Golden Rams scored seven times. Megan Harbaugh led off the inning with a home run and Erin MacNamee delivered a bases clearing double. Sam Ingersoll capped the frame with a two-run shot.
Catawba began to whittle away at the lead in the third when Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) connected on a two-run homer to cut the margin to 7-3. Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) drove home a run in the fifth. Catawba started the seventh with a walk and a single, but the West Chester turned a double play on a sharp grounder to third. Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) was able to draw a walk to set up Huggins’ tying homer.
Chelsea Claypole (Versailles, MO/Morgan Co. HS/Three Rivers CC) got out of a jam in the seventh with the help of Gibbs, who tagged a runner at home on a squeeze attempt. Terry then gave the Lady Indians the lead with her home run. Harbaugh got the first run home in the eighth for the Rams on a sacrifice fly then Kmiecinski hit a 1-2 pitch out to left.
Claypole did not allow a run until the eighth. She came on in relief in the second and surrendered two earned runs off six hits over six innings.
Catawba once again fell behind big after two innings in the second game as Kutztown plated four runs in the frame. Only one of the runs was earned with Kate Lynch collecting a two-run double. Gibbs doubled home runs for Catawba in the third and fifth and the Lady Indians drew within 5-3 in the sixth on a two-out single by Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS).
Kutztown held on as Katlin Arbogast tossed the complete game, getting Huggins for the final out with another chance for a tying home run. Arbogast struck out six and Lynch had four hits and three RBI. Gibbs and Terry each had three hits for Catawba in the combined games.
