Women's Basketball Falls to Late Brevard Rally
BREVARD, NC -- Brevard rallied from a double-digit deficit in the final 10 minutes to snatch a 71-70 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Gym. Samantha Winn gave the Tornados the lead with seven seconds left and Nisha Long’s shot with two seconds left was off the mark. With the win, Brevard qualifies for the SAC Tournament as the #8-seed, improving to 9-18 overall and 3-13 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 15-12 and 8-8, garnering the #5-seed in the league tournament and will travel to Tusculum for a first round game on Wednesday.
Winn had a huge day for Brevard, scoring 30 points and 12-of-24 shooting. She had 16 points at the half and added the remaining 14 in the final eight minutes during the Tornado rally. Anna Schlobohm added 14.
Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) scored 16 points for the Lady Indians and just missed a double-double by adding nine rebounds. Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) also nearly posted a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) tallied 13 points.
Catawba opened the game making seven of their first eight shots with Ivanovic, Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) and Kisha Long each connecting from behind the arc in building a 19-8 lead with 12:44 left in the first half. The Tornados rallied back, going on a 16-4 run started on a pair of Winn free throws and capped by Asheley Watkins’ layup off of a Catawba turnover as Brevard took a 24-23 lead with 7:11 on the clock.
The score would remain close the remainder of the first half before a late Catawba 9-0 run sparked by a Nisha Long layup put the Indians up 42-33 at the end of the first half. Catawba would extend the lead to 14 on three separate occasions on the second half but the Tornados brought the game back within single digits for good as Winn drained a pair of free throws with 7:59 left in the game to put the score at 59-51 in favor of the Lady Indians.
Brevard kept chipping away at the lead, coming within one as Flippo made one of two free throw attempts with 3:42 to play to put the score at 61-60. Winn scored on a layup on the Tornados next trip down to give Brevard the lead. The teams swapped points with neither going up by more than one until Flippo took the pass from Watkins on the right wing and connected on her second three-pointer of the contest to put Brevard up 67-65 with 1:10 to play.
A jumper by Kisha Long tied it up at 67, but the Tornados turned to Winn on each of their next trips down the court and the senior delivered, connecting on both jumpers to give the Tornados the 71-70 lead with seven seconds to play. Nisha Long took the final shot of the game for the Lady Indians, driving baseline, but was unable to put in the layup and in the scramble for the ball, time expired, giving the Tornados the win.
