Baseball Pounds LMU in Series Finale


HARROGATE, TN -- Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS), Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) and Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) combined for 13 hits to help lead seventh-ranked Catawba to a 17-3 win over host Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Hennon Field.  The win improves the Catawba Indians to 13-2 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while the 24th-ranked Railsplitters fall to 9-6 and 3-3.

Catawba pounded out 21 hits in the rout.  Lyerly had five hits, while Moore and Bostian collected four each.  Moore led off the game with a double and scored on a double by Lyerly.  Bostian added a two-run single and the Indians were up 3-0.  Catawba doubled its lead in the second.  Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) led off the frame with a homer, while Lyerly doubled home a run and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) had a RBI single.

Moore homered to lead off the fourth and after RBI singles by Bostian and John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) the lead had swelled to 9-0.  The Indians added four more runs in the sixth to go up 13-0 and Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) capped the offensive outburst with a three-run homer in the ninth.

Lyerly was 5-for-6 in the game and has now reached safely in 50 consecutive games.  He scored five runs.  Moore crossed the plate three times, while Bostian also scored three times and drove in four runs.  Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS/Appalachian St.) had more support than needed as he tossed into the seventh and allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
