Softball Knocked Off by #20 Wayne State

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba lost out in the quarterfinals on Sunday morning at the 2010 Catawba Invitational softball tournament at Salisbury Community Park.  The Catawba Indians dropped a 7-4 decision to 20th-ranked Wayne State, MI.  Catawba falls to 7-7, while Wayne State stayed unbeaten at 5-0 and went on to claim the title.

Catawba jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a first-inning home run by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS).  Wayne State got a run back in its first then exploded for five runs in the third, capped by a home run by Becca Ryan.

The Lady Indians closed within 6-4 in the sixth on a two-run homer by freshman Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS), but Casey Hanes came on to shut the door on Catawba.  She posted two strike outs after the homer and allowed just a two-out single in the seventh.
