Drakes Earns Spot in NCAA II Nationals
ATHENS, GA -- Catawba senior Patrik Drakes (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Rudbechs) is heading back to the NCAA II National meet after qualifying in the Bulldog Invitational held of the weekend at Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia. Drakes will swim both the 100 and 200 breast events at the nationals which run from March 8-13 in Canton, OH.
Drakes swam the third fastest times in school history in both the 100 and 200 breast at the Bulldog Invitational. He finished fifth in the 100 breast with a time of 57.13. He did not swim in the final of the 200 breast, but posted the fifth best time in the preliminary at 2:09.59.
Freshman Alex Higginbotham (Gilroy, CA/Valley Christian) earned a sixth-place finish in the 100 fly and swam a school-record time of 53.01. He also set a new mark in the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.75, which was third in the preliminary. Yakur Malul (Rishon Le-Zion, ISRAEL/Makif Chet) participated in both breast events. He was ninth in the 100 breast (59.75) and seventh in the prelim for the 200 breast (2:16.30).
Swimming for the women was Leah Constan-Tatos (Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA/St. Andrews HS), Katie Huff (Richfield, NC/N. Stanly HS) and Laurenn Singleton (Elkin, NC/Elkin HS). Constan-Tatos was 13th in the 100 fly (1:00.89) and 14th in the 100 free prelim (56.59). Huff placed 13th in the 100 breast (1:07.26) and 10th in the 200 breast (2:26.68) prelims. Singleton was 15th in the 100 back (59.91) and 12th in the 100 free prelim (55.52).
