Baseball Suffers Lost Weekend vs. Mars Hill
SALISBURY, NC -- Mars Hill out-slugged Catawba to take both ends of a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Lions completed a three-game sweep by winning 9-8 and 10-3. Mars Hill improves to 11-5 overall and 7-2 in the SAC, while the 11th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 13-5 and 4-5.
Mars Hill collected 17 hits and scored just enough runs to hold off Catawba in the opener. Catawba twice overcame deficits to lead 4-3 after five and 6-5 after six, but the Lions pushed across four runs in the seventh to take control.
Brett Huffman (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) singled home two runs in the fifth for Catawba to put the Indians on top. Mars Hill struck right back with the aid of a pair of Catawba errors. Mike Kitt (MacClenny, FL) and Devin Presnell (Boone, NC) had RBI singles.
The Indians would go on top again in the sixth as Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) doubled home a run and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) delivered a run-scoring single.
In the seventh, the first five Mars Hill batters reached base to key the big frame. Dalton Hardee (Boone, NC) drove in the go ahead run. Huffman pulled Catawba within 9-8 in the eighth on a two-run single, but Tony Hearell (Charlotte, NC) shut the door, retiring the next five batters for the save.
Kitt and Kris Torrance (Port Jefferson Station, NY) each had three hits in the opener for Mars Hill. Presnell drove in three runs and hit a home run. Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) had three hits for Catawba, while Huffman had four RBI.
The Lions rallied late in game two to gain the sweep. Catawba led 3-0 after four innings, but Mars Hill picked up four runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Bostian had a two-run single in the third and Huffman a home run in the fourth to stake the Indians to their lead.
A pair of Catawba errors helped Mars Hill pull within 3-2 in the fifth then Michael Bueker (Cooper City, FL) put the Lions on top in the sixth with a three-run homer. Rusty Smith (Leesburg, VA) had a two-run single in the seventh as the Lions added some insurance.
Justin Hall (Martinsville, VA) got the win for Mars Hill as he allowed two earned runs over six innings with eight strikeouts. Presnell, Smith and Bueker each had two hits. Catawba starter Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) struck out six in five innings, allowing four runs (three earned). Moore and Lyerly each had two hits.
