Lyerly's Streak Reaches 60 Games as Baseball Tops Urbana 14-9
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rallied for a 14-9 win over Urbana in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians got three-run homers from Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and a tie-breaking two-run homer from Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) in the sixth to improve to 15-6. The Blue Knights fall to 4-5.
Urbana took the quick lead before Lyerly’s homer knotted the score at 4-4 in the third. The hit extended the senior’s streak of reaching base safely to 60 games. The Blue Knights jumped back on top with four runs in the fourth.
Moore brought the Indians within a run in the fourth on his three-run home run then a RBI double by Brett Huffman (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) and a single by Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) in the fifth gave Catawba its first lead at 9-8. Urbana tied the game in the sixth on a single by Zack Roll (Kingston, OH) then Huffman was hit by a pitch with two outs and Furr followed with his go-ahead homer.
Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) earned the win for Catawba. He tossed two innings of hitless relief and posted four strikeouts. Moore went 4-for-5 and scored four runs. Furr added three hits.
Urbana’s damage mostly came from the top of the order as the top five hitters combined for 13 of the 14 hits for the Blue Knights. Roll delivered four hits with three RBI. Trace Fowler (Hamilton, OH) collected three hits with a pair of RBI. Fowler and Andrew Harrell (Lorain, OH) each scored three runs.
