Catawba Holds Off Wingate to Take Series From Bulldogs
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba held on for a 7-4 win over Wingate in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 19-7 overall and 6-6 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 11-8 and 8-4. Catawba has played three of its four league series’ this season on the road and have won two of three in each.
John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford/Guilford Tech) had one of the big blows for Catawba with a two-out, three-run homer in the first. Catawba never trailed after that two-out rally which started with a walk to Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and single by Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) to precede the home run.
Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) scored after tripling in the third and Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS) pitched the Indians out of its first jam in the fourth, replacing Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) with two on and nobody out in the frame.
Three walks and a two-run single by Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) extended the Catawba lead to 6-2 in the fifth and Moore hit a solo home run in the sixth for a 7-2 edge. Wingate made noise in its sixth as Taylor Honeycutt (Indian Trail, NC) led off with a home run then the next three Bulldog batters reached to load the bases with no outs.
Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) allowed a run on a force play, but got a pop up and a fly out to end the frame with only two runs scored and the Indians leading 7-4. Wingate opened the seventh with two singles then Huneycutt got a force play and a double play ball to end the contest and record his second save.
Watson got the win in relief. He allowed two runs (one earned) off five hits. Huneycutt allowed only the two singles in the seventh over his two innings. Lomascolo surrendered just two hits and one earned run in his three innings, but walked four and hit a batter.
Moore was the only Indians with a multi-hit day, collecting two hits and scoring twice. Neese had the three RBI on one swing and Link had his two RBI. Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, GA) had three hits to pace the Wingate attack. Logan Isaacs (Raleigh, NC) had two hits and two RBI.
