MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- Catawba split a softball doubleheader with host Mount Olive on Monday afternoon at Cassell Field.  The Catawba Indians took the opener 8-4 to run its winning streak to 10 games, but fell to the Trojans 6-2 in the nightcap.  The Lady Indians now stand at 19-10 on the year, while Mount Olive is 8-15.

Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) did not allow a run over six innings of work in the opener to improve to 13-1.  She left after five shutout innings then returned in the seventh to post the final three outs.  The sophomore allowed five hits and struck out three.

Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) put Catawba on top in the third with a RBI single then scored on a home run by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) as the Lady Indians went up 3-0.  Katie Huggins (Oviedo, FL/Lake Howell HS/Lake Sumter CC) and Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) stretched the lead to 5-0 after four with RBI singles.

The Lady Indians added three more runs in the fifth, one on a single by Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) and another on a double by Brittney Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS).  Mount Olive got three runs back in its sixth, but could not overcome the deficit.  Marshall, Huggins and Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) each collected a pair of hits for Catawba.

A two-single by Aubrey Reinhard gave Mount Olive a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two and the Trojans never trailed.  An error and another RBI single by Reinhart upped the lead to 3-0 after three.  Catawba cut the lead to a single run on Gibbs’ 11th home run of the year in the fourth and a RBI double by Geouge in the fifth, but a two-run double by Ericka Taylor in the Trojan fifth gave the hosts its 6-2 edge.

Sarah Saunders tossed two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of Sasha Snyder to earn the save.  Geouge and Thornburg each had two hits for the Lady Indians.
