Tuohy Scores Six Points as Lacrosse Tops St. Andrews

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba built an 8-2 halftime lead then held off visiting St. Andrews to post an 11-8 win in lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium.  Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) scored four goals and added two assists to help the Catawba Indians improve to 3-4 on the year.  The Knights fall to 1-6.

Tuohy scored a man-up goal just 41 seconds into the contest and the Indians never trailed.  Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King) tallied the first of his three goals a minute later and Max Vinograd (Bethesda, MD/Whitman HS) added a goal at the 10:49 mark for a 3-0 edge.  St. Andrews picked up its first goal with 4:27 left in the opening quarter on a tally by Bobby Murray (Miami, FL), but Artem beat the first quarter horn to give Catawba a 4-1 lead.

Chris Michela (Oak Hill, VA) scored early in the second quarter for the Knights before Tuohy had two straight for Catawba.  Dave Banik (Marietta, GA/Lassiter HS) pushed the Indian lead to 8-2 on a goal just two seconds before the half.

St. Andrews got a goal 10 seconds into the second half by Andrew Pike (Dublin, OH) which sparked a rally from the visitors.  The Knights scored four straight goals in a span of three minutes to pull within 9-7 at the 2:20 mark of the third quarter.  Riley Fink (University Park, MD) had two of the goals in the run.

Brett Howe (Moseley, VA/Cosby HS) stopped the Knight run with a late third-quarter goal for Catawba and Tuohy added his final tally with 11:41 remaining for an 11-7 lead.  Michael Thomas (Stevensville, MD) scored for St. Andrews with 9:37 left, but neither team found the net after that.

Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods) stopped eight shots in the first half for Catawba, while Josh Liptak (Cary, NC/Athens Drive HS) played the final 30 minutes and recorded five saves.  Kyle Davitt (Shoreview, MN) went the distance for the Knights and had nine saves.  Catawba held a 31-29 edge in shots and picked up 40 ground balls to 25 for the Knights.  The Indians also controlled 13 of 21 face-offs and held St. Andrews to 0-6 on man-up opportunities.
