Mullins Pitches Baseball Past Newberry in Series Opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba senior Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS/Appalachian St.) tossed a complete game in a 7-2 win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 20-7 overall and 7-6 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 11-15 and 1-9.
Mullins scattered six hits, while striking out six. He did not allow his first hit until the fourth inning, a two-out double by Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, SC). At the plate, Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) delivered three hits with a pair of RBI to spark the offense.
Catawba took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-out, two-run single by Brett Huffman (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS). The Indians pushed the lead to 3-0 in third on a solo home run by Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS). The freshman upped his hitting streak to nine games, which includes five home runs in the stretch.
Gartman got Newberry on the board with his double in the fourth that plated Michael Morin (Miami, FL), who had led off with a walk. Catawba took a 5-1 lead after six before Gartman connected on a solo home run in the seventh. The Indians picked up a pair of insurance runs in the eight with two outs as Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) doubled home a run then scored on a single by Link.
Moore had two hits for Catawba as did Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS), who has now reached base safely in 62 straight games. Gartman went 2-for-3 for Newberry with the two RBI. Pierce Labrador (Lexington, SC) also had two hits for Newberry. Chris Roman (Kissimmee, FL) took the loss, allowing six hits and five earned runs over seven innings with 11 strikeouts.
