Baseball Crushes Newberry to Complete Weekend Sweep
Garrett Furr ran his hitting streak to 11 games
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba completed a three-game sweep of visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action, taking both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader at Newman Park. Catawba outlasted Newberry 16-9 in the opener then rolled to a 23-3 win in the nightcap. The Catawba Indians improve to 22-7 overall and 9-6 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 11-18 and 1-11.
Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) jump started Catawba in the opener with a three-run homer in the second. Catawba took a 10-3 lead with a six-run fourth that included a two-run double by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS).
Newberry clawed back into the game, starting with a Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, SC) solo home run in the fifth. Newberry used three Catawba errors in the sixth and seventh frames to pull within 10-8. The Indians got four of the runs back in the seventh. Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) and Moore singled in runs, while Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) doubled home two.
Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) earned the win. He tossed six and two-thirds innings and allowed two earned runs off nine hits with six strikeouts. The Indians survived despite making six errors. None of the 10 runs allowed by Newberry starter Dale Bennett (Summerville, SC) were earned as the visitors made four errors.
Moore had four RBI to pace the Indians. Link, Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) and Brett Huffman (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) each had three hits in the 17-hit Indian attack. Gartman, Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, PUERTO RICO) and Chris Love (Columbia, SC) each provided three hits for Newberry, who collected 15 as a team.
Catawba exploded in game two, taking a 10-1 lead after two innings. John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) had a three-run homer in the early outburst. The Indians added four more home runs in the nightcap, two by Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) that included a grand slam.
Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) allowed two runs off six hits over five innings with five strikeouts to earn the win for Catawba. The Indians pounded out 23 hits, including three more by Moore. Satterfield accounted for six RBI.
Pierce Labrador (Lexington, SC) picked up three hits for Newberry. Gartman delivered two RBI.
