White's 10th-Inning Single Gives Baseball Wild 18-17 Win Over L-R
SALISBURY, NC -- Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View HS) singled home the winning run with no outs in the 10th as Catawba won a wild 18-17 shootout with visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 23-7, while the Bears fall to 12-15.
Lenoir-Rhyne twice rallied from big deficits, 6-0 after an inning and 17-10 after seven frames. Rob Knight (Sterling Heights, MI) drove in his sixth run of the day and the last of seven runs for the Bears in the eighth to tie the game. Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS/Appalachian St.), who improved to 5-1, kept Lenoir-Rhyne off the board in the final two innings and Catawba pushed across the winning run in the first extra frame.
Jacob Faggart (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Appalachian St.) drew a leadoff walk in the 10th and moved to third on a single by Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville). After a walk to Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS), White delivered his pinch-hit single over a drawn in infield.
The teams combined for 43 hits, 22 by Catawba. Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) led the Indians with four hits. Knight and Brian Dice (Hickory, NC) each had four hits for Lenoir-Rhyne and combined for 10 RBI. The top four batters in the Catawba line-up, Moore, Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS), Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) collected 12 hits and each scored three runs for the Tribe.
Furr delivered a two-run single, the first of his three hits in the opening three frames, to jump start Catawba to the 6-0 lead after an inning. The Indians led 11-4 after three innings, but Lenoir-Rhyne chipped away and pulled within a run at 11-10 on a three-run homer by Knight in the sixth.
Bear reliever Jose Guilarte (Miami, FL) tossed three perfect innings before finding trouble with two outs in the seventh. Hohn had led off with a double then the Indians delivered three straight two-out hits before an error prolonged the inning and chased Guilarte. Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) deposited the first pitch from Brian Chandler (Lenoir, NC) for a grand slam and a 17-10 lead.
The Bears benefitted from a pair of Catawba errors in the eighth to tie the contest. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Chris Tucker (Hawthorne, NY) and Colton Hansley (Asheville, NC) brought Lenoir-Rhyne to within 17-16. Lylery’s relay throw from Link cut down a runner at the plate for the second out, but Knight delivered with two outs.
