Softball Sweeps Past Lees-McRae On a Pair of Walk-Off Wins
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a pair of walk-off wins against visiting Lees-McRae in softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. Freshman Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) did the honor in the opener with a RBI-single then senior Brittney Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) turned the trick in the nightcap with a two-run homer. The Catawba Indians won the opener 3-2 then took game two 5-3. Catawba improves to 23-12, while the Bobcats fall to 10-16.
Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) improved to 15-2 with her win in the opener. She allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out four. Catawba managed just six hits off Bobcat starter Magen West (Whitney, TX), but one was a two-out, two-run single by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) in the third that gave the Lady Indians a 2-0 lead.
West hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to trim Catawba’s lead in half then Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, NC) drove home the tying run on a two-out single in the sixth. Thornburg singled to lead off the Catawba seventh and a bunt single by Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) put runners on the corners. Terry followed with a single to center to end the game.
Lees-McRae took the early lead in game two on a solo home run by West in the second. Catawba picked up two runs in the third, the first scoring after Marshall’s liner into left-center was caught, but the throw to the infield got away allowing Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) to score from second. Thornburg drove in the go-ahead run three batters later after a hit by Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) and a walk to Katie Huggins (Oviedo, FL/Lake Howell HS/Lake Sumter CC).
The Bobcats regained the lead in the fourth as Bryce Campbell (Amherst, VA) hit a two-out, two-run homer. Catawba answered right back as Marshall singled with two outs to plate Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS).
Gibbs led off the Catawba seventh with a single, but was erased at second on a sacrifice attempt by Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS). Thornburg then ended things with a home run to left center. Sabat, Gibbs, Thornburg and Gordy each collected a pair of hits for Catawba. West had two hits for LMC. Kelsie Hudson (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis HS) improved to 6-1 with the win for Catawba. She scattered five hits and had one strikeout.
