Softball Settles For Split With Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Brevard split a doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians grabbed a 3-2 win in eighth innings in the opener, while the Tornados held on for a 5-3 victory in the nightcap. The Lady Indians are now 24-13 overall and 1-3 in the SAC, while Brevard is 13-14 and 2-2.
Catawba pulled off its third straight walk-off win in the opener. Callie Gordie (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) scored from second when a sacrifice bunt by Kathryn Geouge (Canton, OH/Pisgah HS) was thrown away at first. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Geouge and Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howand HS) led off with singles and scored on an error and a sacrifice fly.
Brevard picked up a pair of runs in the third. Michelle Turner (Sumter, SC) reached to lead off the frame when her infield pop up was lost in the sun. She later scored on an error, while Kristina Clayton (Graham, NC) tied the game with a two-out double.
Each team managed just five hits with only one of the five combined runs earned. Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) got the win for Catawba and improved to 16-2. She struck out four. Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, NC) took the loss for Brevard, but struck out eight.
Brevard kept Catawba from another walk-off win in the nightcap as centerfielder Becca Curlee (Eagle River, AK) made a diving catch on a line drive to end the game after the Lady Indians had loaded the bases. Elmore earned the win in game two for Brevard and posted 11 strikeouts.
The Tornados took a 5-2 lead in the fifth when they scored three runs. Nicole Heusel (Lawrenceville, GA) led off with a double and after a failed sacrifice bunt, Brevard loaded the bases with a walk and a hit. Brittany Jones (Fort Mill, SC) and Elmore drove in runs with singles sandwiched around a RBI fielder’s choice by Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, AK). Jones had doubled home two runs in the first with a two-out double.
Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) plated a Catawba run in the first on a ground out and Brittney Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) singled home a run in the fourth after a triple by Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough HS) to draw the Lady Indians even. A ground out by Sabat got Catawba within 5-3 in the fifth. Geouge, Sabat and Gibbs had singles for Catawba in the seventh before Hester’s liner was caught.
Heusel and Jones each had two hits for Brevard in game two. Geouge and Gibbs each had two hits for Catawba. Sabat had the only multi-hit game of the opener with a pair of hits.
