Lacrosse Sweeps Deep South Player of the Week Awards
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba swept the Deep South Conference Player of the Week awards for the week ending March 28, league officials announced Monday afternoon. Sophomore attack Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, Canada/Christ the King) is the Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore goalie Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Heritage Woods) is the Defensive Player of the Week and Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll HS) is the Freshman of the Week.
Artem accounted for eight points and was part of over half of Catawba’s goals in the 14-7 win over Rollins. He scored five times and assisted on three others in the DSC victory. Three of his goals came in a seven-goal spurt that saw the Indians build a 4-3 lead early in the second quarter to an 11-3 advantage with just a minute to go in the third quarter. Artem also picked up a pair of ground balls on the afternoon. Artem has 20 goals and six assists on the season.
Pecchia allowed only five goals in 57.5 minutes in the victory over Rollins. He collected 15 saves and had a .750 save percentage, while also collecting five ground balls. Pecchia has a 12.25 goal against average and a .548 save percentage on the year.
Cullop had two goals and two assists in the Rollins victory, while also collecting four ground balls. The freshman scored his first goal midway through the first quarter to tie the game at two. His second goal was one of two the Indians had in a 27 second span after the Tars had pulled within 4-3 to give Catawba a 6-3 lead. He assisted on a pair of third-quarter goals to help Catawba extend its lead to 11-3. On the season, Cullop has scored nine goals and collected eight assists.
