Solid Pitching, Marshall's Bat Propels Softball to Sweep of #24 Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from 24th-ranked Wingate on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians rallied for an 8-4 win in the opener then took a 4-1 victory in the second game. The Lady Indians improve to 26-13 overall and 3-3 in the SAC. The visiting Bulldogs fall to 26-8 and 3-5.
Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) wielded the big bat for Catawba, going 4-for-7 with seven RBI in the doubleheader. She doubled home two runs in the fifth inning of the opener to give the Lady Indians a 4-3 lead and her three-run homer in the fifth inning of the nightcap was the decider. The RBI upped her season total to 57 which surpasses her own school mark of 56 she set in 2007.
Wingate took the lead in the opener on a two-out hit by Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, NC) in the first. The Bulldogs used a Catawba error in the second to stretch the lead to 3-0. Emily Chavis (Berkeley Lake, GA) singled home a run and Debra Grijalva (San Jose, CA) drew a bases loaded walk.
The Bulldogs looked to add to their lead in third, but Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) turned a line drive to third into a double play to give Catawba momentum. The Lady Indians scored twice in their third to pull within 3-2. Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) plated a run on a fielder’s choice then later raced home from second on a wild pitch.
Marshall delivered her double with two outs in the fifth to push Catawba to the lead. Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) singled her home for a 5-3 edge. The Lady Indians added three more runs in the sixth. Geouge had one RBI then Marshall singled home two more with two outs. Geouge scored three times in the opener and eclipsed her old school mark for runs scored in a season with 49 this year.
Wingate got a run back in the seventh on a fielder’s choice by Joya Wortham (Creedmoor, NC), but Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) recorded the final out on a pop up with two runners on. Murray improved to 17-2 as she scattered nine hits and allowed two earned runs. LaRonda McClain (Kings Mountain, NC) had three of the Wingate hits in the opener.
Gina Ager (Columbia, MD) doubled home a run in the second to give Wingate a 1-0 lead in game two. Gibbs tied things up in the third with a solo home run, her 12th of the season. Marshall had the deciding hit on her 11th homer of the year with one out in the fifth for the 4-1 lead.
Freshman Kelsie Hudson (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis HS) allowed just five hits in the nightcap to improve to 7-2. She struck out three. Allison Smith (Daleville, VA) held Catawba to just five hits, but took the loss and fell to 12-4. Brittany Blankenship (Midlothian, VA) was tagged with the loss in the opener and dropped to 14-4.
