Lacorsse Falls at Belmont Abbey 10-7
SALISBURY, NC -- Host Belmont Abbey scored five straight second-half goals and went on to defeat Catawba 10-7 in lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Crusaders improve to 4-4, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-5. Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) led Catawba, scoring three goals in a losing effort.
Catawba scored three goals in the final 5:05 of the first quarter and added an early second-quarter goal from Max Vinograd (Bethesda, MD/Whitman HS) to lead 5-2. The Crusaders rallied to tie the game at the half, getting a goal from Nick Boylan just three seconds before the break.
Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King) gave Catawba its last lead just over three minutes into the second half then Belmont Abbey would scored five unanswered goals to go on top 10-6 with just three minutes remaining. Tuohy ended the Catawba scoring draught with 1:15 left, but that would be the final tally of the game.
Tuohy added an assist to total four points on the day. Artem had a goal and two helpers. Dave DiLuigi had three goals for the Crusaders, including one a man down for their final tally with 3:10 to play. Tanner Scharr had two goals and an assist. Merrick Rowland played the second half in goal for Belmont Abbey and stopped six of eight shots on goal. Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods) posted 10 saves for Catawba.
