Volleyball falls at Newberry in fiveNEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba dropped a tough five-set South Atlantic Conference volleyball match on Tuesday night at Eleazer Gym. The Lady Indians fell in a match that saw all five games decided by the minimum two points. Newberry improves to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 2-7 and 0-4. In the first game, Newberry led early, only to see Catawba come back to take a six point lead at 18-12. That six point lead would happen to be the largest lead of the evening for either team in the match. Newberry battled back to close the gap to 29-28 and had serve, but their fifth service error of the game gave Catawba a 30-28 win. In the second game, Newberry led 19-14, but could not sustain the lead. Catawba freshman, Hope Miller (Newton, NC) was able to serve Catawba back into the game and even the score at 19. From there, the two teams battled back and forth, with Newberry's four service errors keeping them from putting any distance between the two teams. Finally, with the score even at 31, Newberry took the lead with a side out and won it on Dalton Fowler's (Pickens, SC) final serve of the game. The third game saw Catawba pull out a 30-28 win, but the visitors let Newberry hang around due to their six service errors. It was the first service errors of the match for Catawba. After a 4-0 start for Catawba in the game, Newberry cut the lead, and the two teams were never separated by more than the final two point margin. Game four saw Newberry jump out to a 4-0 lead, only to see Catawba come charging back, and following a kill from Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC), Catawba led 15-14. Senior Donna Coaxum (Summerville, SC) served Newberry into a 19-15 lead. A lead, that once again, Newberry could not hold. Miller, who was a thorn in Newberry's side the whole match, once again used her service game to put Catawba into the lead. Catawba actually scored seven consecutive points off Miller's serve to lead 26-21. With the score 28-23, Newberry had a mini-run of four consecutive points off junior Brandy Bradshaw's (High Springs, FL) serve to cut the lead to 28-27. But when Catawba regained serve on a side out, they were only one point away from victory in the game and match. Newberry fought back to regain serve and actually even the game at 29, but once again, Catawba regained serve, and needed but one service point for the victory. This time, the home team not only got the serve back, but scored two more points off senior Bronwyn Libeer's (Columbia, SC) serve to send the match to the final fifth game. Catawba jumped out in the fifth game, leading at 6-2 and 9-5, but Newberry battled back and finally caught Catawba at 11. The two teams then traded serves to 13. Newberry then regained serve for their 14th point, and won the game and match on a net ball from Catawba. Hewitt and Miller led Catawba with 18 kills each, while Miller had a double-double, adding 22 digs. Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD) had a match-high 58 assists in the contest. Newberry was led by Fowler's 14 kills. Libeer had 27 digs and sophomore Aubrey Mosley (Columbia, SC) had 50 assists. With the win, Newberry stops a three-match losing streak. The loss was Catawba's seventh consecutive.
