Baseball's Title Hopes Dimmed With Loss to Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Brevard knocked off 26th-ranked Catawba 10-6 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park. The Tornados improve to 8-27 overall and 2-17 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians end an 11-game winning streak, falling to 29-8 and 12-7.
Shane Galloway (Rosman, NC) tossed the complete game for the Tornados to improve to 3-3. He survived a late Catawba rally, scattering nine hits and allowing three earned runs. He walked one and struck out eight in delivering 139 pitches.
Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, NC) went 3-for-5 and scored three runs for Brevard. He gave the Tornados the lead in the first with a two-out double. Kellen Moman (Greenville, SC) followed with a two-run homer to stake the visitors to an early 3-0 edge. Leading 5-0 after four, Brevard broke the game open with a five-run fifth.
Catawba whittled away at the lead, scoring its first run in the fifth as Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) led off with a double and scored on an error after a bunt single by Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS). The Indians pulled two more runs back in the eighth on a two-run triple by Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS). The triple was a school-record 15th by the senior in his career.
Hohn hit a two-run homer in the ninth for Catawba and Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) doubled home another run to cut the margin to 10-6 with only one out. Galloway persevered and got Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) and Lyerly on strikeouts to end the contest.
Ronald Patterson (Gloversville, NY) and Derek Ham (Charlotte, NC) each added a pair of hits in Brevard’s 13-hit attack. Moman had three RBI. Hohn, Link and Lyerly each had two hits for Catawba.
