Baseball Rallies For Doubleheader Sweep of Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba staged an improbable rally to complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians, ranked 26th in NCAA II, won by the scores of 6-2 and 7-6 to improve to 31-8 overall and 14-7 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 8-29 and 2-19.
Garrett Furr’s (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) pinch-hit single with one out in the seventh capped a five-run rally to give the Indians the dramatic win. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville), who tied the opener on a two-run homer in the seventh, tied game two with a two-run double to cap a 3-for-4 outing.
The Indians trailed 6-2 entering their final at bat and benefitted from five walks and a bloop single to left that fell between three Tornados. Brevard had led from the outset after scoring twice in the opening inning. The Tornados pushed across single runs in each of the last four innings, two on home runs by Eric Renegar (Stuart, VA) and Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, NC).
Corn went 3-for-3 in the nightcap and Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, NC) also had three hits. Jacob White (Elkin, NC) limited Catawba to just two runs on six hits before leaving after six innings. Hohn had the only multi-hit game for the Indians in game two. Criage Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) singled and walked three times. He also stole a pair of bases to break the school record with 92 swipes in his career.
In the opener, Brevard grabbed a 2-0 lead on Kramer Clark’s (Candler, NC) two-run homer in the sixth. Catawba’s Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) had to leave the game after surrendering a leadoff single in the sixth, only the third hit allowed with six strikeouts.
Hohn was able to pull the Indians even with a two-run homer in the seventh and Catawba added four in the eighth to pull out the win. Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) singled home the go-ahead run with two outs. After an error allowed another run to score, Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) provided some insurance with a two-run double.
Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) got the win in relief for Catawba. He allowed a home run to Kramer, the first batter he faced, then pitched shutout ball the rest of the way. He allowed two hits over four innings and struck out five. Lyerly reached base on a walk in the opener and his streak of reaching base safely has extended to 74 games.
