Sabat's Four Hits Helps Softball Split With UNC Pembroke
SALISBURY, TN -- Catawba and UNC Pembroke split a softball doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Whitley Field. The host Catawba Indians held on for a 5-4 win in the opener, while the Braves earned the split with a 4-0 victory in game two. The Lady Indians now stand at 29-18 on the year, while UNCP is 29-17.
Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) drove in a pair of runs with a pair of hits to lead Catawba in the opener. Jamie Burwell (Enka, NC) tossed the shutout to give UNCP the split in the nightcap. Offensively, Randi Pruitt (Maiden, NC) had three hits and a home run for the Braves after a pair of hits in the opener. Sabat added two more hits along with Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) for Catawba in game two. Jelena Shaw (Hope Mills, NC) had three hits for UNCP in game one.
Catawba survived a late UNCP rally in the opener and held on for the win. Down 5-0 entering the seventh the Braves collected half of their 10 hits in the frame and got the go-ahead run to second before Sami Santoli (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown West HS) got a foul out to left field to end the game. She improved to 3-5.
Pembroke started the seventh with four straight hits to cut the margin to 5-2 on Ashley Harrell’s (Morganton, NC) two-run single. After a pair of groundouts, Shaw doubled home two more. A walk and a wild pitch got two runners into scoring position before the last out.
Catawba jumped out quickly to lead 4-0 after two innings. The Lady Indians drew four walks in the opening two frames and three of those scored. Geouge walked to open the first, stole second and scored when Sabat’s grounder to third was thrown away.
The Lady Indians scored three times in the second after two were out. Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) and Geouge drew walks and Sabat singled Gordy home. Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) doubled home Geouge and Sabat, driving a 3-0 pitch to right center. Sabat singled home Gordy in the fourth to stake Catawba to its 5-0 lead.
Burwell was in control of the nightcap, allowing just five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Catawba did get the tying run to the plate in the sixth, but Marshall’s fly ball to left was turned into a double play to quiet the threat.
The Braves broke a scoreless tie in the fifth as again the first four batters of the frame reached base. After a leadoff walk to Loren Bartz (Greenville, NC), Pruitt doubled and Burwell brought the first run home on a bunt single. Lynn Grantham (Goldsboro, NC) added a RBI single and Shaw a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead. Pruitt connected on a solo homer in the seventh.
