Baseball Wins in Extra-Innings Over Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the 11th to give 28th-ranked Catawba a 6-5 win over visiting Wingate in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. With the win, the Catawba Indians improve to 32-8 and have won three of four meetings this year with the Bulldogs, who claimed the league title last weekend. Wingate falls to 27-14.
Catawba drew four walks in the 11th inning off Wingate reliever Justin Somers (Wilmington, NC), who had pitched a perfect 10th frame with a pair of strikeouts. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) drew a leadoff walk on a 3-2 pitch then Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford) struck out after fouling off a pair of bunt attempts.
A wild pitch moved Hohn to second and Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) walked. Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) was intentionally walked to bring up Link. Link took a five-pitch walk that forced in the winning run.
Wingate grabbed the early lead, getting three two-out hits to go on top 3-0 in the first. Tres Ramirez (Ocala, FL) doubled home the initial run, while Brian Yeung (Raleigh, NC) and Nick Seiga-Riz (Clemmons, NC) each singled home a run. Yeung drove home another run for the Bulldogs in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.
The lead was erased by one swing from Moore in the Catawba fifth as he bombed a 3-2 pitch way out to left center for a grand slam and a tie game. The Indians scratched out one more run in the frame. Link reached on an error and came around to score on a two-out single by Brett Huffman (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS). The Bulldogs forced extra frames as Logan Isaacs (Wakefield, NC) led off the Wingate ninth with a solo home run.
The teams combined for 25 hits, but also teamed up for 29 strikeouts. Lee Oxendine (Laurinburg, NC) posted eight strikeouts as he tossed five innings after the home run to Moore. Somers had three in his one-plus inning, while Bulldog starter Dusty White (Charlotte, NC) fanned four.
Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) scattered nine hits over four and a third innings with three strikeouts. He got excellent relief help from Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS), who went three and a third innings, allowing no runs off two hits with four strikeouts. Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) got the final two outs for the Indians and improved to 3-0.
Moore went 3-for-4 to pace the Catawba offense. Huffman, Hohn, Parker and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) each had a pair of hits. Lyerly extended his streak of reaching base safely to 75 games. Yeung, Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, GA), Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, NC) and Dodson McPherson (Graham, NC) tallied a pair of hits for Wingate.
