Lacrosse Stuns #8 Mars Hill to Advance to Deep South Final
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba upset #8 Mars Hill 9-6 on Thursday night at Mears Stadium to advance to the championship game of the 2010 Deep South Conference Lacrosse Tournament. The Catawba Indians, seeded second in the North Division, improve to 7-6. The top-seeded Lions fall to 10-4.
Catawba will host the title game on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium against Saint Leo, the top seed from the South Division. Saint Leo topped Florida Southern 10-9 in the other semifinal. Saint Leo and Mars Hill had met for the title the last two years with the Saint Leo winning its first title last season. Catawba will be making its fourth trip to the championship game and looking for its first title.
The Indians never trailed to the nationally-ranked Lions, scoring the opening three goals in the first five and half minutes. Senior Max Vinograd (Bethesda, MD/Whitman HS) put Catawba on top at the 13:39 mark and DSC Freshman of the Year, Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll HS), added another just 40 seconds later for a 2-0 edge. Freddie Turcio (Guilford, CT/Guilford HS) closed out the initial burst with 9:30 to go in the opening frame.
Mars Hill got back within a goal with 5:56 left in the quarter on the first of three tallies by Cade Zulak. The teams swapped goals the rest of the half with Cullop delivering his second goal of the game just 13 ticks before the break for a 6-4 Catawba edge.
Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) scored three minutes into the second half to restore Catawba’s three-goal edge, but a man-up goal by DSC Player of the Year, Danny Farmer, and the final tally from Zulak again got the hosts within a single goal with 3:55 left in the third quarter. The Indians pulled ahead 8-6 as Stephen Shuba (Orlando, FL/Olympia HS) scored at the end of a 1:30 man-up advantage early in the fourth quarter and Vinograd salted the game away with the game’s final goal with 2:57 left.
Catawba got two goals each from Vinograd, Cullop and Wayne Carbiener (Orlando, FL/Olympia HS). Tuohy totaled three points with a goal and two assists. Casey Chinn (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) won 12-of-19 face-offs and led the Tribe with six ground balls. Catawba was just 12-of-25 in face-offs during the first meeting with Mars Hill this season.
Mars Hill was led by Zulak’s three goals. Farmer had a goal and two assists. Catawba’s Josh Liptak (Cary, NC/Athens Drive HS) posted six saves, stopping half of the Lions’ 29 shots that were on goal. The Indians had 28 shots with 16 on goal. Dylan Price recorded seven saves for Mars Hill.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak by Catawba to Mars Hill and avenged an earlier 15-7 loss to the Lions this season. Catawba dropped a 16-5 decision to Saint Leo in the regular-season meeting between the teams back on Feb. 28.
