Women's Soccer to see action on SaturdayThe Catawba College women’s soccer team will face NCAA I High Point University in an exhibition match on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Catawba has been picked third in the conference’s pre-season coaches poll behind defending champion Tusculum and Presbyterian.Catawba missed the league title last year by just a half a game with a 5-2 mark to Tusculum, who finished 5-1-1 in the league. The Lady Indians pinned the only loss on Tusculum in the league slate. Catawba won its first five conference matches, but fell in its final two outings and were 8-7-1 overall under first-year and SAC Coach of the Year, John Cullen. The Lady Indians return eight starters from last year, but three are nursing injuries. Danielle Mora will miss the year after several concussions last season, while Jessica Parker and Becky Paul should return in September after post-season knee injuries. Kim Clayton, last year’s SAC Player of the Year, heads the list of returners. She posted a 1.23 goals against average and set a record with six straight shutouts. Parker and Jamie Fink also earned All-SAC honors last year. Fink led the team with four goals and added four assists, while Parker had three goals. Charlsie Downing, a senior transfer from Lenoir-Rhyne, joins the team and was an All-SAC performer for L-R last season. Several freshman will be looked on to fill in for lost starters and injured ones, including defenders Lindsay Layman, Lisa DeMeyer and Jessica Hull. Midfield help will come from Maran Bock, Kyley Thompson and Stephanie Morey, while Catherine Ballentine will back-up Clayton in goal. Catawba will open its regular season on Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. at Barton College in Wilson, NC. The Lady Indians host St. Andrews on Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. in their home opener. #####
