Softball Just Short in Upset Bid of #7 LR at SAC Tournament
WINGATE, NC -- One pitch separated Catawba from upsetting #7 Lenoir-Rhyne in the opening round of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex. Megan Laxton’s three-run home run in the fifth lifted the top-seeded Bears to a 3-1 win. L-R improves to 45-6, while the Catawba Indians (29-23), seeded eighth, fall into the elimination bracket.
Alex Smith won the pitchers duel against Catawba’s Chelsea Claypole (Versailles, MO/Morgan Co. HS/Three Rivers CC). Smith, now 19-3, allowed no earned runs off three hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Claypole surrendered just four hits, walked none and posted three strikeouts in falling to 1-9.
Catawba scored first in the fourth. Callie Gordie (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) singled with one out and moved to second on an error. She advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS). The other hit for Catawba came in the sixth as Gordy singled following a walk to Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) with one out. Marshall walked to load the bases with two outs, but Smith stranded all three runners with a strikeout to end the frame.
Lenoir-Rhyne collected three of its hits in the fifth inning. Claypole had tossed four perfect frames before Sarah Atkins led off the fifth with a single. Following a sacrifice, Jessica Fellmeth singled then Laxton stepped in to put the Bears on top with one swing. Carlee Carpenter had the other hit for L-R on a sixth-inning single.
