FOREST CITY, NC -- Catawba freshman Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) tossed eight strong innings and Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) nailed down his second straight save in a 4-2 win over Tusculum on Friday night at the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament at McNair Field.  The 24th-ranked Catawba Indians, now 36-10, are the only undefeated team remaining in the tournament and will play the winner of Saturday’s noon elimination game between Tusculum (30-17) and sixth-seeded Lincoln Memorial at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Lomascolo improved to 6-2 as he surrendered just two unearned runs off three hits over eight innings of work.  He walked two, hit a batter and fanned seven.  Huneycutt entered in the ninth after an error allowed the leadoff batter to reach, but the Tribe’s save leader induced a double play ball and then a ground out to end the contest.

Catawba was also limited to just three hits, but Ryan Bositan (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) came up with two big ones.  He put the Indians on top in the third with a two-out, two-run double then provided an insurance run in the seventh with another two-out double.

Tusculum starter Taylor Rakes (Norcross, GA) allowed one earned run and two hits over six and a third innings of work.  He avoided a serious deficit in the third when he survived a 45-pitch frame by stranding the bases loaded after the double by Bostian.

Down 2-0 in the fourth, Paul Finger (Lincolnton, NC) erased the deficit on a two-out, two-run homer.  It was one of two hits for Finger and came after a Catawba error extended the inning.

Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) put the Indians back on top in the sixth when he connected on a two-out solo home run.  Bostian then drove in Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State), who had reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second with two outs on a failed pick-off attempt.
