Volleyball to open 2002 athletic campaign

The Catawba College volleyball team will officially open up the 2002 athletic season, hosting the Catawba Invitational on the weekend of Aug. 30-31. The Lady Indians will open play on the 30th against Winston-Salem State at 3 p.m. Catawba will also play at 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Catawba returns five starters from last year SAC Tournament and NCAA II playoff squad and were tabbed to finish second in the pre-season league coaches poll. Senior All-SAC and Tournament MVP, Rachel LaRoche, heads the list of returners. The hitter led the team last year with 353 kills and added 75 blocks and 188 digs. Also back is setter Lettie Wilkes, Hope Miller and Heather Hawkins, who were all named to the SAC All-Tournament squad. Wilkes had just over 1,000 assists and added 54 aces and 261 digs. Miller led the way with 414 digs and added 299 kills, while Hawkins had 95 kills and 78 blocks. Also back is Elizabeth Hewitt, who totaled 113 blocks and 288 kills, Crystal Bonner, 270 digs and 24 aces, and Erin Naumann, 189 digs and 38 kills. Transfer Crissi Harrison, from Western Carolina, will be a key new addition. Other newcomers include setter Nicole Scheidt and hitter Summer Zuck. #####
