Pembroke Shuts Out Baseball In Top 25 Battle
PEMBROKE, NC -- In a battle of nationally ranked teams, #21 UNC Pembroke posted a 7-0 shutout over #26 Catawba in baseball action on Wednesday night at Cox Field. The Braves got eight strong innings from Matt McGovern to improve to 33-13. The Catawba Indians fall to 38-11.
Catawba freshman Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) nearly matched the Pembroke weekend ace, as he allowed just one run over six frames. UNCP got on the board in the fifth when Josh Haley led off with a triple and scored on a one-out single by Seth Kivett.
Whitley left after surrendering a leadoff single in the seventh and the Braves went to work on the Catawba pen. Aided by a pair of errors, Pembroke scored six in the inning to grab their 7-0 lead. Kivett doubled home a run while Aaron Parnell added a two-run double and Alex Pearce a two-run single.
McGovern allowed just seven hits with seven strikeouts over eight innings to improve to 9-1. Rudy Brown tossed the ninth to close out the game. Whitley, making his first start since March 31 and first appearance since April 10, falls to 3-1. He allowed two runs off six hits in his six innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) had the only multi-hit game for the Indians as he went 2-for-4. Craige Lyerly had a sixth-inning single to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 84 games. Kivett and Parnell each had two hits for UNCP.
