AIKEN, SC -- Catawba grabbed a 9-3 lead after three innings and held off host USC Aiken for an 11-8 win in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Hernandez Stadium.  The 26th-ranked Catawba Indians close out the regular-season with a 40-11 mark and will next play in the NCAA II Southeast Regional Tournament from May 13-16.  The Pacers, ranked 25th in NCAA II, fall to 31-18.

Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) got Catawba rolling as he led off the game with a homer.  John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) added a three-run shot in the frame as the Tribe took a 4-0 lead.  Aiken battled back as Travis Howard made an Indian error pay with a two-out, two-run homer in the Pacer first, while Josh Attaway singled home a run in the second to cut the lead to 4-3.

Catawba took command with a five-run fourth.  Criage Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) singled to open the inning, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 86 games.  Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) got a run home on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.  Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) singled home a run and Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) plated a run on a ground out.  Moore and Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) singled home the last two runs of the inning.

The Pacers kept creeping back into the game.  Gary Asbill hit a two-run homer in the sixth to close the gap to 10-5 then USCA pulled within 11-8 in the eighth on a pinch-hit, two-run homer by Tripp Warrick.  A two-out Catawba error in the ninth allowed the Pacers to load the bases, but Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) came to get a ground out to notch his second save.

Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) had three hits to pace the Catawba offense.  Moore, Bostian, Lyerly and Underwood all had two hits.  Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) picked up the win to improve to 7-2.  He allowed five runs (three earned) off eight hits over six innings.
