Cross Country to run on Saturday

The Catawba College cross country teams will see their first action on Saturday morning at the Western Carolina Invitational. The Tribe is one of four non-Division I teams in the field, which includes fellow SAC member Mars Hill. In addition to host WCU, the field will include Wofford and ACC member Clemson. The Catawba men return five runners from last season, including two-time All-SAC and All-Region performer, Jesse Howes. He holds the school record in an 8k with a time of 26:50 last season and holds most of the schools top ten times. Howes will serve as a captain for the men, along with Justin Garzone, the only senior. Garzone was a top-twenty finisher at the SAC Meet and was 34th at the NCAA II Southeast Regional. Key additions include freshman Ryan Willis and David Bost, a red-shirt from Salisbury, NC, who signed with The Citadel out of high school. On the women’s side, All-SAC performer Rebecca DeFeo heads the list of four returners. She took individual honors in the opening meet last season at Lander and also had a second and third place finish diring the year. She was the top performer in each of the ladies eight meets and was 24th at the NCAA II Regional. Two other returners, Twanita Jones and Caitlin Koukal, will serve as captains for the women. Jones had four top twenty finishes last season, while Koukal finished in the top twenty on three occasions. Freshman Carol Marquis should be one of the top new runners in the league. #####
