Moore and Lyerly Selected in 19th Round of Baseball Entry Draft

Catawba seniors, Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS/NC State) and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS), were selected in the 19th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Entry Draft on Tuesday.  The duo were separated by just 15 picks as Moore went #566 to the Washington Nationals, while Lyerly was claimed by the Tampa Bay Rays as the #581 pick.

Moore and Lyerly become the fifth and sixth Catawba players drafted in the past three seasons.  They will bring the total to seven Indians currently in pro baseball.

Catawba had three players selected in 2008.  Jerry Sands is currently playing with Class A Great Lakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week three times this season.  David Thomas injured a shoulder playing for Class A Stockton for the Oakland A’s farm team and is on the disabled list.  Tim Smith is playing independent baseball in Pennsylvania.

Last season, Chris Ahearn was selected by the San Diego Padres.  He has battled injuries and is with the Arizona League Padres.  Ryan Query was signed as a free agent in March and is with the Atlanta Braves team in the Gulf Coast League.
