Softball Signs Five For 2011 Season

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College softball coach, Nan Whitley, has announced five commitments for the upcoming 2011 season.  Joining Catawba for next season are Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC), Connal Kelly (Tallmadge, OH), Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC), Katie Smith (Goodwater, AL) and Alycia Stiles (Harleysville, PA).

Huneycutt, a pitcher and first baseman, started four years at West Stanly High School.  She was named the Region 6 Co-Pitcher of the Year in 2009 and was a three-time All-State, all-district, all-county and all-conference selection.  Huneycutt was also an all-conference cross country runner for the Colts.  Her brother, Wil, is a standout on the Catawba baseball team.

Kelly, who played shortstop and in the outfield, was a three-year starter at Tallmadge High School.  She was an All-Suburban Conference selection, helping the Blue Devils to a pair of league titles and appearances in the state final four.  Tallmadge was 47-14 over her last two seasons.

Myers started four years at Swain County High School, seeing action as catcher, shortstop and as an outfielder.  She set the state high school record with 188 career hits and established 14 school marks.  Myers batted .602 with nine home runs as a senior, helping the Maroon Devils to a second straight state runner-up finish.  She was named the conference, region and Asheville Citizen-Times Player of the Year.

Smith, a pitcher, started every year at Coosa Central High School.  She was named the top defensive player each year.  Smith tossed over 300 innings her final two years and posted an ERA under 3.00.

Stiles was a three-year starter as a shortstop at Souderton Area High School.  She was a two-time all-conference pick and hit .355 as a senior.  She also played field hockey for the Indians.
