Smith's Overtime Goal Lifts Men's Soccer to Season-Opening Win
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba sophomore Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) scored just a minute into the second overtime period to lift the visiting Indians to a 2-1 win over Pfeiffer in men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at Lefko Field. It marked the season opener for both squads.
Smith took a long pass from lone Catawba senior Mark Ketterer (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert HS) and tucked a shot into the lower left corner for the winner. The Indians had opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Eoin Duffy (Knocknacarra, IRELAND/U. of Galway) freed Deon Cuffie-Joseph (Arima, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO/High Point U.) on a breakaway.
Pfeiffer leveled the match in the 52nd minute as Jeff Cannon scored off a combination pass from Johannes Tisell and Dany Bardizbanian. The Falcons held a 19-12 edge in shots with Catawba freshman keeper Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS) making eight saves. His Falcon counterpart, Alex Moreno, stopped six shots.
